Client
A leading and listed energy equipment manufacturing and services company, with over 70,000 employees, headquartered in the United States. The company operates through three main segments: Power, Wind, and Electrification and digital technologies for the transmission, distribution, and management of electricity.
Challenge
A foundational technical course had supported employees for more than a decade. Originally developed using legacy technologies, it was later migrated to HTML to maintain learner access. But, while the technology had changed, the learning experience largely had not.
The 114-screen course retained nested interactions, non-linear navigation, repetitive information, dated layouts, and low-resolution imagery. These elements added unnecessary complexity to subject matter that was already inherently technical.
At the same time, the underlying engineering content remained valid and SME-approved. The challenge wasn’t to simplify the engineering. It was to remove the unnecessary complexity surrounding how that engineering was learned.
Solution
Mediant Labs approached the project as a learning transformation rather than a visual refresh. There was an opportunity for learners to explore industrial environments and understand how equipment and systems fit together. By combining content modernization with web-based 3D assets and immersive AR/VR experiences, the client could support knowledge transfer across instructor-led, digital, internal, and customer training initiatives.
The redesign focused on three areas:
- Simplifying the learning architecture
- Creating conceptual continuity
- Using visualization to enhance understanding
From Legacy to Modern Learning
Preserving Technical Integrity
Modernization could not come at the expense of engineering accuracy.
The existing SME-approved content remained the technical foundation of the course. Mediant Labs focused on how that content was structured, sequenced, visualized, and experienced rather than changing its technical meaning.
Any additions introduced to improve continuity were validated by the SME. The experience could be reimagined. The engineering could not.
Making Complex Ideas Digestible Through Visualization
Low-resolution and dated imagery was replaced, where appropriate, with icons, 3D imagery, motion graphics and animation.
Rather than using animation as decoration, it was applied where movement and process were important to understanding, helping learners visualize complex processes and component relationships. Interactive 3D models and animations added visual depth to technical content and help move beyond static training materials. The realistic models give instructors visual references to demonstrate equipment and explain complex systems to internal employees and customers. The AR/VR experiences allowed learners to walk through digital facilities and understand equipment in its broader context.
“Did you know” and “Guess what” moments provided purposeful changes of pace within extended technical instruction.
Client feedback validated the redesign, specifically highlighting:
- A strong and well-structured learning flow
- A logical progression created by aligning content with the actual operating process
- Interactions that help manage complexity and reduce cognitive load
- Visuals and animation that support technical understanding
The feedback reinforces the central design objective: make complex technical content easier to navigate and understand without simplifying the technical substance.
Because modernization isn’t about making old learning look new.
It’s about making valuable knowledge work better.
Mediant Labs continues to support the client with an integrated capability, spanning 3D development, immersive learning, software engineering, and process improvement.
